2026 GRAMMY Predictions: Canadian R&B & Pop — My Toronto-Biased Picks

I was 11 when Michael Jackson held what felt like every GRAMMY in the room. That night, hard-wired me with an “anything is possible” attitude. Any time someone said, “Wayne, that’s not how it’s done,” I got flashbacks of that stage and asked, “Why not?”
This isn’t a recap. It’s my early ballot for Canadian R&B and Pop—what should happen, based on the music I actually played and replayed.

Dates that actually matter (so we’re all aligned)

I’ll update this post on Nov 7 as soon as noms land.

My early ballot board (Canadian R&B & Pop)

1) The Weeknd — Hurry Up Tomorrow (Album of the Year; Pop/R&B field)

It’s cinematic, moody, and ambitious—the kind of world-building big rooms are built for. Released Jan 31, 2025, with cuts like “São Paulo” and “Open Hearts.” If voters want cohesion and reach, this is Canada’s best AOTY shot.

2) Tate McRae — So Close To What (Best Pop Vocal Album; Pop Solo Performance)

Crisp, gym-floor hooks with real legs: “2 Hands,” “Sports Car,” “Revolving Door.” The leap from Think Later is obvious, and the album’s Feb 21, 2025 drop sits perfectly in-window.

Where I see it: Best Pop Vocal Album; Pop Solo Performance (one of the above singles).

3) Jessie Reyez — Paid in Memories (Best R&B Album; R&B Performance/Song)

One of my personal favs. Heart on sleeve, pen like a scalpel. Released Mar 28, 2025 and stuffed with lines you feel in your chest. If voters lean toward lyric truth over vocal gymnastics, this should be on more ballots.

4) Shawn Mendes — Shawn (Pop field)

Dropped Nov 15, 2024—eligible—and lived on radio/TV with “Heart of Gold” and more. If he submits, this can make noise in Pop Vocal Album and Pop Solo lanes.

Dark-horse Canadians to watch

  • Jon Vinyl  —  is that Toronto slow-burn I keep coming back to—‘War’ and ‘Dopamine’ feel like late-night streetlights on Eglinton—this brother deserves a ballot look.
  • AP Dhillon — steady 2025 output; if a crossover single keeps building, a Pop/Global Music look isn’t crazy.

  • Nelly Furtado“Love Bites” (May 22, 2024) is just outside this cycle, but if the album campaign put eligible follow-ups inside the window, she’s in the Pop chat.

“Where’s Daniel Caesar?”

He just announced Son of Spergy for Oct 24, 2025, which is after this year’s cutoff—so he’s next cycle. Booo! (But yes, I’m ready.)

What I think voters reward this year

  1. Cohesive albums that still stream like singles. (The Weeknd’s lane.)

  2. Pop with touring legs, not just TikTok sparks. (Tate McRae checks boxes.)

  3. Emotion-first R&B writing. (Jessie Reyez’ superpower.)

Quick FAQ

When are 2026 GRAMMY nominations?
Fri, Nov 7, 2025.

Eligibility window?
Aug 31, 2024 → Aug 30, 2025.

Why the MJ reference?
Because on Feb 28, 1984, he won eight GRAMMYs in one night and rewired a lot of us to believe bigger.
